The Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Vienna has world-leading researchers in Computer Science who pursue basic as well as applied research. The UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science (DoCS) builds an essential framework to foster excellence in research and teaching. Its main focus are young prospective researchers eager to make an impact on both basic research as well as applied problems with collaborations across the University and beyond. The DoCS aims to provide these young researchers with the broad knowledge and expertise needed to perform Computer Science research at the highest achievable quality. The Doctoral School trains doctoral candidates in solving basic as well as applied research questions of high relevance.
The Research Group “CSLEARN -Educational Technologies”pursues interdisciplinary research combining methods and theories from Education, Learning and Social Sciences, Human-Centered Computing, Learning Analytics and Machine Learning investigatingopen problems in teaching and learning of Computer Science Education and creatingpotential technological solutions within educational settingin general.Amongst multiple research engagements, one line of teaching activitieswithin the group is specifically dedicated to pre-service teacher education in Computer Science. We offer a diverse and challenging position addressing candidates who seek to pursue a doctorate in one of theresearch fields of the group.The candidate will be involved in all activities of the group related to academic administration and teaching as well as research including publishing and presenting research results at conferences and in prestigious research journals as well as grant application processes. Therefore, the position prepares for a potential career in academic, administration or business contexts of Computer Science Educationand Educational Technologies.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc)with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Participation in research, teaching and administration:
- Participation in research projects / research studies
- Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
- We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses within the undergraduate program of the Faculty as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Candidatesmust have a university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) relatedto the research field of the group by the expected start date. Candidates in all areas of Computer Science, Informatics, or Software Engineering are welcomedto apply, particularly those with experiencesor a strong interest (or both) in machine learningtechniques, human centered computing, learning analytics, learning sciences, or educational psychology.Alternatively, candidates have graduatedin learning sciencesand/or educational psychology with Computer Science as minor subject orstrongreadiness toComputer Science, particularly programming. Mostly, we encouragein-service teachers of Computer Science in K-12/secondary education or graduateswith a degree in Computer Science Teacher Educationto apply.
Candidates bring a strong interest and commitment to the research field of the group and find it exciting to investigate questions of teaching and learning Computer Scienceby combining techniques and methods from machine learning and/orlearning analytics with empirical social research methods and theoriesto create educational technology solutions andcontribute new insights to Computer Science Education research with the aim of getting their doctoral degree. We expect proficient speaking and writing English skills. Basic German language skills or a strong commitment to adopt German within the first yearsare also strongly favored. The position includes regular teaching duties in courses of the undergraduate study programs offered at the Computer Science Faculty, mostly in the Computer Science Teacher Educationprogramand depending on the candidate’s academic background.
