University Assistant (post doc)
at the Department of Mineralogy and Crystallography (Reference number: 11116)
to 29.12.2020.

The Department of Mineralogy and Cristallography invites applications for a temporary postdoctoral researcher position with focus on microbeam-analysis techniques. The successful candidate will be particularly in charge of operating scanning electron microscopes including focused ion beam and electron back-scatter diffraction, and managing the department's dispersive Raman/luminescence spectroscopy and oven labs; including teaching/training duties in these analytical fields. The successful candidate will also do transmission electron microscopy studies in external laboratories. In order to reinforce the existing research group we are looking for an ambitious University Assistant (PostDoc) who is capable to establish self-contained activities in an interdisciplinary field comprising mineralogy, solid state physics, and materials science, with particular focus on defect centres in minerals and structural changes as caused by corpuscular irradiation.

There might be the option to extend the duration of the employment temporarily.

The position is vacant for the period of absence of a member of staff.

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The appointment involves
(i) Development of research ideas related to defects in minerals, and the quantification of effects of corpuscular irradiation,
(ii) Autonomous preparation of thin-foil samples using a focused-ion-beam system,
(iii) Analytical tasks, especially using electron-beam techniques and micro-spectroscopy,
(iv) Acquisition of research funding, in particular for accelerator experiments at dedicated large-scale facilities,
(v) Supervision of the department's spectroscopy and oven laboratories, including communication with manufacturers, time management, and basic introduction of users,
(vi) Independent teaching as defined by the collective agreement,
(vii) Supervision of students,
(viii) Training in the field of micro-beam analytical techniques.

Successful candidates must fulfill the following conditions:
- Completion of a Ph.D. / Doctorate in mineralogy, materials science, solid state physics, or related discipline,
- Corresponding record of research and teaching activities,
- Proven skills in the operation of electron microscopes, FIB, EBSD, and dispersive spectrometer systems; good computer skills,
- Basic IT knowledge (operating systems, system administration),
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Knowledge of the German language is welcomed but not necessary.

Excellent team-working skills are expected.

The successful candidate should be willing for short-term research stays in laboratories abroad.
