Die im deutschen Marl geborene Wissenschafterin studierte Agrarwissenschaft an der Universität für Bodenkultur in Wien, wo sie 1989 promovierte und sich 10 Jahre später habilitierte. Seit 2003 ist Sylvia Blümel Institutsleiterin des Instituts für Pflanzengesundheit der Agentur für Gesundheit und Ernährungssicherheit (AGES), an dessen Aufbau sie wesentlich beteiligt war. Zusätzlich lehrt Sylvia Blümel an der Universität für Bodenkultur.
