Gender Summit 2021: Gender Equality, Diversity, Inclusion post-Corona: Quo vadis?

14. - 16.04.2021 VIRTUAL live event with some pre-recorded sessions

AGENDA

Gender equality, diversity, and inclusion have been identified as essential pre-requisites for excellence in science and scholarship, as well as for the socio-economic development of societies. Much progress has been made since the publication in 2000 of the ETAN report, which for the first time presented detailed statistical evidence on the underrepresentation of women in science in the EU. Since then, equal treatment legislation, gender mainstreaming, integration of the gender perspective into relevant policies, as well as specific gender equality intervention measures to advance women, have contributed to the observed improvements in the status and involvement in knowledge endeavours. Still, gender gaps persist in certain fields and in leadership positions, and gender bias favouring evidence for men is widespread in scientific literature. They manifest more general, historical lack of diversity among researchers, science leaders and decision-makers, and populations selected for study. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, all the gaps, biases and inequalities have become more sharply expressed. While we are still grappling with understanding the long-term consequences of the pandemic on researchers, their scientific endeavours, and on society, it is already apparent that integrating gender equality, diversity, and inclusion objectives into the science methods and into the mechanisms of international collaboration and interaction, which are fundamental to scientific progress, will enhance scientific excellence, improve quality of research outcomes for all, and ensure societal trust in science knowledge.

The summit will convene international decision makers, policy representatives, funders, scientists and scholars from disciplines and sectors to discuss the current and emerging challenges facing science and society, and develop a more equal, inclusive, and sustainable vision of excellence in science.

The event is open to any interested parties. Advance registration is required. The summit is planned as a hybrid event, with on-site elements in Munich, as well as remote elements. The event may be be turned into an entirely digital event should the situation in Spring 2021 require this.
