The research group "Astronomical Instrumentation" at the Department of Astrophysics at the University of Vienna is looking for motivated scientists to work in the area of software development for astronomical data analysis and simulation of observational data in the context of the ESO Extremely Large Telescope instrumentation projects at the Department. Three positions need to be filled.

Duration of employment: 3 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves

  • Active contribution to instrumentation projects of the Department of Astrophysics, in particular the ESO ELT instrumentation projects (The expected involvement includes especially the design and development of data reduction pipelines for photometric and spectroscopic optical infrared data and the development of software tools for the simulation of astronomical observations.)
  • (Co-)Organisation of and participation in international instrument consortium and collaboration meetings
  • Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Contributions to general organisational and administrative tasks

Profile:

  • Doctoral degree / PhD degree in astronomy / astrophysics or physics with focus in astronomy / astrophysics with experience in the areas of astronomy / astrophysics, with preference in observational oriented astronomy and development of astronomical data reduction software
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Excellent communication skills

Experience:

  • Data acquisition, data reduction and data analysis of astronomical instruments in the optical and infrared wavelength regions
  • Simulation of observational data
  • Use of state-of-the-art astronomical software packages, in particular ESO instrument data reduction pipelines
  • ESO standards of software development
  • At least one major programming language relevant in astronomy (c/c++, Python, ...)

The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, 184 fields of study, approx. 10.400 members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position from 01.10.2022 of a University Assistant (prae doc) at the Department of Astrophysics to 30.09.2024.

The Department of Astrophysics is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy at the University of Vienna. Presently about 70 employees work at the department. The advertised praedoc position is associated with the chair for 'data science in astrophysics' of Prof. Oliver Hahn. Our group has privileged access to the Vienna Scientific Cluster supercomputing facility, and support for travel funds is available.

We are looking for an ambitious, independent, goal-oriented scientist with interests in the numerical modelling of the large-scale structure of the Universe and which has a background in cosmology/astrophysics. The candidate should have a strong background in computing, preferably also in the HPC context.

The topic of the proposed project is to develop new numerical tools for cosmological simulations in the precision era used for large-scale structure cosmology, galaxy formation studies, and dark matter research.

The position is funded for two years by the University of Vienna with a subsequent employment for further two years as a project prae doc scientist. Within this scope the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended accordingly, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job Description:

  • Responsibilities include scientific research, the participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses (as definded by the collective agreement) and the conduct of examinations as well as participation in teaching evaluations and in administrative tasks.
  • We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months, to become a member of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS) and to actively participate in its activities.

Profile:

  • Diploma or master degree in Astrophysics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related area.
  • Very good command of written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of FORTRAN / C / C++ is a must.

Strong programming skills and an aptitude for the implementation and experimental exploration of numerical algorithms. Experience with HPC (i.e. running parallel jobs on clusters) and parallel programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA) is a clear bonus. Prior knowledge in the field of cosmology and astrophysics is also a bonus.
