The Department of Geography and Regional Research is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. It is the largest and oldest Geography department in Austria and ranked as no. 1 in German-speaking countries and as no. 28 worldwide. The department offers scientific degrees in the bachelor program, four master programs, a teacher education program, a PhD program as well as in the faculty-arching master program in “Environmental Sciences”. The praedoc position is assigned to the research group Physical Geography, which has a sound reputation in the research domains of landslides, “human impact” on geosystems and spatial modeling of geomorphic processes as well as in the applied research including global environmental change, natural hazards and – risks, vulnerability, multi-hazard risk and early warning systems (geomorph.univie.ac.at). The position is embedded in the EU-Horizon project PARATUS - Promoting disaster preparedness and resilience by co‐developing stakeholder support tools for managing the systemic risk of compounding disasters.

Position can be extended by max. 1 year.

Duration of employment: 3 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The employment aims to deepen and extend the professional and scientific education targeting a PhD. Your areas of work include:

  • Writing a dissertation
  • Contribution to scientific studies
  • Involvement in international co-operations
  • Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
  • Integration into the research group and participation in administrative duties

Profile:

  • Graduate degree in Geography or Applied Geology / Engineering Geology (major in Physical Geography, or equivalent), Environmental Sciences
  • Interest in process geomorphology and local and spatial monitoring, analysis and landslide modeling
  • Profound field experience
  • Greatest interest in vulnerability analysis, the interaction of single and multi-hazards in different scenarios and sectors
  • Greatest interest in extreme events and natural hazards and their impact on natural and socio-economic systems in mountain regions
  • GIS-qualifications are beneficial
  • Skills in project management
  • Excellent pedagogic teaching skills
  • Knowledge in e-learning is beneficial
  • Excellent knowledge in German in English in word and writing
  • High command of written and oral language - Ability to work in within a team embedded in the large EU-Horizon consortium
